ECOM – Environmental consultancy in Montenegro
ECOM is an independent and voluntary association that gathers experts in the field of environmental protection with the main goal of raising awareness and developing ecological culture among young people, through cooperation with related environmental organizations and institutions on national and international level.
The headquarters of the organization is in Kotor, and the area of activity is the whole territory of Montenegro.
The main goals and tasks of ECOM are:
- organization of environmental activities and implementation of projects, independently or in cooperation with related environmental institutions, organizations, and associations of citizens
- international cooperation and membership in ecological networks and associations
- education and raising of public awareness regarding the need to protect the environment and the development of ecological culture among young people.
- expanding environmental scientific and professional knowledge through cooperation and information exchange with related organizations
- organization of workshops, seminars, presentations, exhibitions, and similar activities in order to introduce and apply the achievements of modern science and practice of environmental protection.
Professional areas in which ECOM achieves its program goals are:
- education about sustainable development,
- integrated management of natural resources,
- sensitivity assessment, risk assessment and strategic environmental impact assessment,
- assessment of the impact of interventions on the environment.
- standardization in the field of environmental protection,
- biodiversity,
- wetlands, coastal areas and marine environment
- land and marine protected areas
- natural and cultural heritage
- information technologies for the environment,
- awareness raising for environmental protection.
Activities and programs of ECOM:
ECOM exists since 2001, and in the past period has implemented several campaigns and projects.
Since 2003, ECOM has been associated, and since 2009, a full member of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) – an international organization that gathers over 100 non-governmental organizations from 82 countries. FEE, as an organization with 40 years of experience in education for sustainable development, launched a new strategic plan in 2021 – GAIA 20:30, which prioritizes actions to address the urgent threats of climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental pollution. In cooperation with its members at the national level, FEE conducts its activities through 5 programs: “Blue Flag”, “Green Key”, “Eco-Schools”, “Learning about forests” and “Young Reporters for the Environment”.
The implementation of three FEE programs in Montenegro: “Blue Flag” (since 2003), “Young Eco-Reporters” (since 2008) and “Green Key” (since 2017) is in accordance with ECOM's requirements to implement the principles of applied environmental protection through raising the awareness of individuals about environmental problems, changing behavior patterns, and improving the environment in which we live.
Since 2016, ECOM has been involved in the implementation of the “Eco School” program, whose national operator is the Institute of Education of Montenegro.
Members of ECOM were permanent collaborators of several scientific and popular magazines: “Gorske staze”, “Soa nebeska”, “Barske novine”, “Pomorstvo” as well as the radio program – “Eco corner” of Radio Kotor.
ECOM, as an organization that deals with consulting work in the field of environmental protection, believes that the basis of solving any environmental problem is training and raising awareness of the individual about the environment. In this way, when an individual is presented with the causes of an environmental problem, he is influenced to directly take the initiative for active and applied environmental protection.
